So I find it odd that so many games just make the ocean a single-biome coral reef, or underwater temple… but that’s totally averted in Subnautica. In this game, the ocean is vibrant, varied and full of life! It holds a massive array of predators, prey, and different locales for the player to explore-and almost every single one of them is beautiful. Seriously, if there’s one thing I can praise the game for, it’s the aesthetics. After all, the ocean is one of the most diverse, unique places on earth-it’s a place with several different biomes, where a MASSIVE variety of species live. And don’t get me wrong-that aesthetic is often colorful, vibrant and all-around beautiful. I see this almost everywhere-games where the underwater sections are literally just sand, water and some generic fish and foliage. Secondly, with the entire focus being on the alien ocean, the creators can make the game more than “just another water level”.

So, if the entire game is centered around traveling the ocean, then there is nothing to slow down from the pace of the game remains consistent, and the fear of drowning is not a risk that is suddenly thrown onto the player.
